A recent story of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) highlighted the work South Central Power Company and its broadband subsidiary, connectSCP, are doing to help members improve their digital skills.
The story highlighted the collaboration between the organizations and AARP’s Senior Planet program, which provides nonprofits with course materials to help them teach digital literacy classes to people aged 60 and older.
Kayty Schooley, manager of customer service-fiber for connectSCP, launched the program at South Central Power in 2024 after going through training with Senior Planet. She offers Senior Planet courses and other classes free of charge in the areas where connectSCP is building its fiber optic network. Topics range from understanding telehealth services to recognizing and avoiding internet fraud and scams.
Offering these programs has been a way to encourage internet use and adoption. More importantly, they help South Central Power’s members understand the value of high speed internet and further the cooperative principles of community care and education.
