LANCASTER, Ohio — March 3, 2026 — South Central Power Co., a member-owned electric cooperative serving communities since 1936, has been awarded a $10,000 subgrant from AARP’s Older Adults Technology Services (OATS), with additional funding from AT&T to expand digital literacy programming for older adults across its service territory.
The funding will support and grow the cooperative’s Senior Planet classes, which provide free technology education to older adults in rural communities. As South Central Power has expanded high-speed fiber internet through its subsidiary, connectSCP, the cooperative identified a growing need for digital skills training among members — many of whom had never previously had access to reliable internet service.
“For some of our members, this is the first time they’ve had high-speed internet in their homes,” said Kayty Schooley, manager of customer service–fiber for connectSCP and a certified Senior Planet instructor since October 2024. “South Central Power and connectSCP understand that it’s not enough to simply offer high-speed internet. We want our members and subscribers to feel confident using it — whether that’s accessing telehealth services, staying connected with family and friends, or streaming their favorite shows.”
Since launching the program, South Central Power has offered Senior Planet courses in Belmont, Harrison and Highland counties through partnerships with local libraries, senior centers, and South Central Power/connectSCP offices in Hillsboro and Barnesville. The new grant will help expand programming and reach more members.
As part of the grant agreement, South Central Power will offer Senior Planet programs incorporating AT&T Connected Learning resources by Aug. 31, 2026. Several sessions are already scheduled, with additional community partnerships in development to further broaden access.
“Cooperatives are built on principles of education and community support,” Schooley said. “Working with Senior Planet allows us to put those principles into action by helping our members embrace the opportunities of today’s digital world.”
Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP created Senior Planet to empower adults aged 60 and older to learn new skills, save money, improve their health and make new connections through technology. Programming focuses on five impact areas: financial security, social engagement, creative expression, health and wellness, and civic participation.
