Electricity is something we rely on every day, but it is also easy to overlook small issues that can turn into bigger problems if left unchecked.
As warmer weather brings more outdoor projects and spring cleaning, a few simple reminders and tips can go a long way. The tips on these pages highlight easy, practical ways to reduce electrical hazards and help keep your home and family safe.
Inside
- Avoid plugging too many devices into one outlet.
- Make sure all powered devices are properly grounded.
- Install ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, and other potentially wet areas.
- If small children are present, install safety plugs on all unused outlets.
- use extension cords only on a temporary basis and never locate them under rugs or furniture.
- Make sure all lightbulbs are the appropriate wattage for the fixture.
Outside
- Install protective covers on all outlets and make sure they are GFCIs.
- use only weather-resistent extension cords rated for outdoor use.
- Check wires for wear and tear before using any powered equipment.
- Look around for overhead power lines before using a ladder or trimming tree branches.
- Power lines may be buried underground. Before digging, call 811 to have underground lines marked.
