Unexpected power outages can be frustrating and confusing. Here's what you should -- and should not -- do when the power goes out.
Do: Report the outage
First, check your electrical panel to make sure an overloaded circuit didn't cause your outage. As for reporting outages, be aware that based on activity from your meter, South Central Power already knows you are without power. If you are enrolled in the outage texting program, you’ll automatically receive a text from us at 740-422-6888 indicating that your power is out. If you're not enrolled, be sure to check out our website to learn how to enroll.
Don't: Use candles
To reduce the risk of fire, use flashlights or portable battery-powered lanterns to see in the darkness.
Do: Turn off appliances and unplug electronics
Turn off any appliances, equipment or electronics you were using. Unplug sensitive electronics that can be damaged by a strong surge of power.
Don't: Heat your home with a gas stove
Gas cooktops and ovens aren't meant for space heating. Trying to use gas to heat your home could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Do: Conserve your phone's battery
Turn down screen brightness and turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and location services to extend your phone's battery life and stay up to date on outage information.
Don't: Open the refrigerator or freezer
Perishable food will remain at a safe temperature much longer if the doors are kept shut.
These tips can help you and your loved ones stay safe and comfortable during an outage.
